Often the terms 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' are used interchangeably. This is because counselling and psychotherapy are both 'talking therapies'. This means that the counsellor/therapist focuses on helping their clients talk about their problems in a safe and confidential space.
Others argue that training in psychotherapy is longer, at greater depth and equips the therapist to work with more complex issues. There are many different approaches and models of counselling and psychotherapy. The UKCP provide further information about a range of psychotherapy approaches - see their website for further details: https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/about-psychotherapy/types/ It is important you find the right approach for your needs.
